Towerrunning family welcomes new event in Santa Fe

This is an official press release.

Last weekend it was time again to welcome a new member in the Towerrunning family. The Carrera Vertical Nivea Q10 celebrated its premiere at Hotel Distrito Capital in Santa Fe, the business district of Mexico City. 28 floors and 560 steps had to be mastered by the participants. Similar to the World Cup final in Bogota, the unusual height of 2660 meters above sea level made the event even more challenging.

Sergio Rodriguez Duran was the fastest athlete of the day in 3:52 min and therefore celebrated his first victory at a World Cup race. Sandra Nunez, World Cup silver medallist of 2010, took the chance at her home event and won the women’s race by clocking a time of 4:32.

The only small drop of bitterness was the low number of only 42 athletes climbing Hotel Distrito Capital. Nevertheless the professionally organized event gave a certain impetus to the Towerrunning sport in Central America, so we look forward to see other new tower runs in this region entering the World Cup calendar.

The Carrera Vertical in Mexico City is only one of various examples underlining a positive trend in the Towerrunning Sport. The international stair climbing scene is prospering and month after month new races are established. Looking at the event statistics, this development becomes clear. In the 2008 season 109 races were carried out in 20 countries. Since the introduction of Towerrunning World Cup in 2009, this value has increased steadily. In 2011, more than 100,000 athletes from 55 nations met at 170 events in 26 countries. And the first four months of the current season make us expecting a further increase of these numbers. So far 88 races – 19 more than at the same time last year – attracted about 54,000 athletes to experience the vertical challenge of a tower run. As in the previous season athletes from 39 nations were able to achieve World Cup points until the end of April.

In May the selection of outdoor stair races will be enriched by a new event in Austria: The Reißeck Wadlbeißer in Kolbnitz with its 8971 stairs extends the range of European long distance races and opens the national stair racing series Towerrunning Austria.

Towerrunning – Bieg Na Szczyt Rondo 1 in Warsaw, 19th of May 2012

This is an official press release

We are really pleased to welcome all international athletes to the second  edition of the race to the top of Rondo 1 held on 19th of May, 2012. The  event has been incorporated in the Towerrunning World Cup calendar as one of the 18 Masters Races. We hope to host many climbers from all  over the world in Warsaw for the “Bieg Na Szczyt Rondo 1”. Just like  last year the event will be a charity race – the amount of starting fees will  be transferred to SOS Children’s Villages Association.

The European Towerrunning scene is becoming more and more competitive. Last year 54 stair climbing events were  held in 11 European nations. Among them was the premiere of the „Bieg Na Szczyt Rondo 1” in Warsaw. Due to the  outstanding organizational quality and the international field of the 2011 edition the race has been selected as a 2012  Towerrunning World Cup Masters Race and now belongs to the exclusive selection of the 18 most important stair  climbing events worldwide. Therefore an international high-class participants field is expected to compete in Warsaw  on May 19th , 2012.

Furthermore the event could be of special interest for all competitors of the first official Towerrunning European Championships, which will be held two weeks later on June 3rd in Frankfurt / Main (Germany). The second edition of  „Bieg Na Szczyt Rondo 1” could serve as an optimal test competition for the event in Frankfurt, since almost the  same tournament modus will be used in Warsaw. The event in Rondo 1 will start with a qualifying round using a  single time trial format and the best twelve men and women will negotiate the stairwell again to the top of the  skyscraper in the final round (mass start with a starting grid based on the qualifying result).

The price money for the 1st place is 1500 zloty, for the 2nd place 1000 zloty and for the third place 800 zloty. The  runners on ranks 4 to 6 will receive 600, 400 and 200 zloty. Additionally all competitors will get an attractive starting  package, functional shirt and a commemorative medal when they reach the top of the building.

Towerrunning – World Cup News, 30.01.2012

The Corrida Vertical in Sao Paulo announced as final event of the ISF stair climbing series „Vertical World Circuit 2011” originally was scheduled in December and in another building. Finally some international top athletes climbed Edificio Abril in Sao Paulo on January 25.

As is common procedure in buildings of this kind the finish at the very top – the heliport – was restricted to the elites. Starting every 30 seconds with a horn blow on the street before the tower, through the lobby and into the stairwell the runners climbed up sometimes on marble stairs and finally sprinted out in the open on the heliport to the finish line.

Female winner was 2009 World Mountain Running Champion Valentina Belotti (ITA) in 3:53 beating Kristin Frey (USA) with 4:15 and Cristina Bonacina (ITA) with 4:33. In opposite to the World Cup final in Bogota the Brazilian home runners had no chance against the international elite.

The male race was a clear story too. Thomas Dold (GER) needed 3:03 and so was 11 seconds faster than Omar Bekkali (BEL). On 3rd one second behind Fabio Ruga (ITA). Not too happy with his race was Matthias Jahn (GER) who took 4th in 3:27. The next places went to the best home athlete Evander Franco (BRA) and Norbert Lechner (AUT).

The current leaders of the Towerrunning World Cup – the official world ranking for the stair climbing sport governed and regulated by Towerrunning Office Vienna – are Thomas Dold (GER) with 240 points and Kristin Frey (USA) with 260 points after their podium ranks in Sao Paulo. The United States stair climbing team defends the lead in the Nations Cup.

On February 4th Brazil will again host a Towerrunning World Cup event. With the „Corrida Vertical” in Florianopolis the new Brazilian Towerrunning series „Circuito Brasil de Corrida Vertical” will be launched.
